LA adds on more (mini) bin

In an effort to stop the 25% of table scraps that end up in Los Angeles area landfills, LA residents are getting these cool little green bins to keep in their kitchens.  Food scraps and leftovers go in the mini bin and then out to the big green bin making it easier, and hopefully more doable.  Way to go LA!

Toronto, Canada has a similar program. We've been doing it for several years - and as far as I know it's working well with home owners. The only problem is that we haven't extended it to apartments or multistory condos yet - so many people throwing so much compostable food away!

Glad to see it's reached LA!!

Hi Dave, I read about you in an AP article in my local newspaper and really admire what you are doing. You are so right about making one little change and it leading to other changes in your life. It just gets easier, *and* more fun to be creative about what to do with recycling and reusing and reducing the amount of trash we produce.

Anyway, about these green bins, I sure wish that Pennsylvania would get these. I HATE throwing out food - and I live in an apartment so I can't compost. My apt. complex is also removing my garbage disposal when they renovate my kitchen this week - so I am trying to think creatively and figure out what the heck to do with my table scraps.

Keep up the good work Dave!

Hey Liz,
Thanks for stopping by. I know you may think me nuts, but you could easily have one of those worm composters in your kitchen and never even know it was there. They don't smell and as long as you keep enough shredded paper on top of the food, no bugs either. Something to think about.

I actually was just looking over that option after reading more of your blog! I think the worm composter is the way for me to go... Thanks Dave!

Megan,
Thanks for the post. Have you considered writing an email to your local representative and asking them why it makes sense for houses to have this option and not apartment buildings? It may be worth pointing out that apartment living would make it even easier to make a dent in the problem as there is one pick up point for a lot of people as opposed to multiple pick up points for the same amount. Let me know if you do and what you find out.
