Can a "normal" American family achieve zero waste? Practically.

Great story on a Northern California home of 4 people who have taken their waste stream down to a small amount of recycling and compost.  Something we can all aspire to!

The simple life sounds perfect but it is still suprizing just how much work goes into living simply. Sorting, thinking, reducing at first it can be hard but once you get into a routine it becomes second nature.

Wow, this is really cool. I can't believe someone, better yet a family, has managed to have practically no trash. There are six people in my family and it is very hard to keep the trash bin from overflowing the times that the trash does get picked up so the fact that a family of four has managed to keep there trash at almost zero is absolutely amazing.

I read the whole article and was really surprised by what the Johnson family does. As a teenage girl, its typical for me to own a closet and wardrobe full of clothes. When I looked at what their closet looked like I was taken back. I am not quite sure if I could shop only twice a year and at a thrift store. It's truly amazing what they do. It made me think of what I truly need and that isn't much.
Thanks for the post!

That was such a great thing about those families. They are a role model for the better future to conserve and protect our environment. Hope this post is enough to encourage us to do what is our great responsibility in our living world.

Thanks for this post: very inspiring!

My husband and I were able to reduce our waste to 1-2 garbage bags total per week from 6 a week. In fact, our kitchen garbage can often smells long before the bag is full!

Wow, who knew that a family could actually achieve zero waste?! This makes me seem like a wasteful person compared to them. Hmmmm...maybe I should take some of their advice and live a better lifestyle.
